In the latest episode of The Walking Dead, we finally get some Daryl Dixon quality time.
Yes, I know. This recap is HELLA late. Sue me (please don’t).
The episode begins with Abraham, Sasha and Darryl moving ahead of the herd so they don’t end up being overrun. As they make their way down the road, a group of seriously armed men starts shooting at them. Who the hell are these guys? Big Red and Sasha go one way and Darryl, after recovering from a brief fall off of his bike, goes another. Daryl gets away and ends up in a burned out part of the woods. The other two crash through a gate and come out with guns blazing, killing their pursuers. Abraham wants to make sure they’re dead, but Sasha pulls him back, stating there may be more shooters out there.
Daryl, who’s hurt, calls his friends on his walkie and gets nothing but static. He hears something and goes into hunter mode. He finds two scared women but gets knocked out by a guy who is apparently with them. D wakes up sporadically during the night, and then fully in the morning. He’s tied up and the dude who knocked him out sticks a gun in his face. Since we know Daryl ain’t scared of no gun, his current situation won’t last too much longer. He gets away, grabbing the bag with his crossbow. Daryl frees himself from his bonds just in time to see a walker coming his way. After a bit of a struggle, he gets his crossbow loaded and puts an arrow in the walker’s head. After that close call, Daryl notices a box marked “insulin” in the bag he swiped. Being the good guy that he is, he heads back to find the group so he can return it.
Meanwhile, Big Red and Sasha hole up in what looks like a military recruitment office. A walker is locked in one of the offices, which Abraham wants to get rid of. Sasha asks him why and he says, “Because loose ends make my ass itch.” I’ll be repeating that line until I get sick of it, which will be never. Sasha, already over her existential crisis, tries to bring Red back down to reality but he ain’t trying to hear any of that mess. He heads out and finds a vehicle loaded with military weapons and a box of Cuban cigars. Abraham tries to get the weapon strapped on the back of a walker that is hanging from a broken fence, but he can’t get to it since said walker tries to bite his hand off. Eventually, the slow rot of the walker causes it to break apart and fall to the ground, leaving the weapon Abraham wanted hanging on the fence.
Daryl sneaks up on the trio who took him hostage, trading the insulin for a carving whittled by dude who stuck the gun in his face. Just then, some vehicles pull up and the trio start quaking in their boots. The four of them are surrounded by guys with guns, some words are exchanged between the trio and a guy named Wade, who seems to be the leader. Wade, whose face we never see, sounds like a no nonsense kind of guy, which means we’ll be seeing more of him in the near future. Another truck pulls up and Daryl helps the trio hide, surveying the area as they get out of sight. He sees a walker trapped behind something as one of Wade’s men walks by. Daryl shakes some leaves, which the man hears and walks towards the sound. The trapped walker grabs the guy and bites him on the arm. He screams to Wade that he’s been bit and begs him to cut off the infected part of his arm, which Wade does with no hesitation. Wade and his man walk back to the truck and everyone leaves.
Later, the quartet walk through the woods and end up near a burned out camp. They find two corpses who happen to be people the trio knew before. One of the women starts crying between the corpses and ends up getting bit by both, killing her in the process. As they dig a grave for their dead friend, Daryl gives the remaining two the three-question quiz and then tells them about Alexandria. They find Daryl’s bike, and head to the road, but then the two decide taking his bike and crossbow would be better. When they get on the bike, the woman says sorry to Daryl, to which he answers, “You’re gonna be.” Can’t wait to see that happen! Daryl tries to get another vehicle and finds a fuel truck. He clears out the walker in the driver’s seat and hits the road.
Back at the recruitment office, Abraham and Sasha do a little more verbal sparring, which turns into Big Red telling Sasha how much he wants to get to know her. Is this a new couple we’re seeing? Only time will tell. Later, Abraham puts on a uniform he finds in one of the closets, and I must say, he looks damn good. Looks like Sasha thinks so too, but she doesn’t say it out loud. They hear a vehicle pull up and see that it’s Daryl. They all pile into the truck and head back to Alexandria. Daryl calls Rick on the walkie and hears someone say what sounds like, “Don’t.” Who was that? Is there more chaos at Alexandria? And where the hell is Glenn?
