In the latest episode of The Walking Dead, we meet up with some old friends.
So, this episode was pretty tame (thank goodness) and we finally know what happened to Tara, who washed up on some beach and almost had her skull impaled by a way-too-eager young girl. Heath, not so much. The pair had been out for two weeks scavenging but only found rusty cans of okra (which is awful no matter what you do with it) and that’s about it. Heath was ready to go back, but was also still freaked out about what happened at the Saviors’ outpost. Get over it, dude. This is the real world. He started whining (yes, I said whining because damn, he lives in the Apocalypse and it ain’t a pretty place so suck it up) about how Rick and the Gang slaughtered everyone there. Wait until he finds out what the Saviors are really like. I bet Heath will change that tune of his real quick.
Anywho, Tara and Heath ended up at a bridge that looked deserted, save for the huge pile of sand, some trucks and stalled cars. The two decided to scavenge, but ended up fighting for their lives after the pile of sand toppled and walkers rose out of it and came after them. They ended up getting separated and Heath, instead of helping Tara, disappeared. WTF???
Tara ended up being saved by a young woman named Cyndie, who hid her, gave her food and water and basically kept her out of sight. Apparently, that was a no-no, cuz the crazy kid who wanted to impale Tara said she wouldn’t help. Kids are the worst, sometimes. After her latest visit, Cyndie went back to her camp and Tara followed. Cyndie’s camp was deep in the woods, out of sight. It was pretty well run and seemed to be relatively quiet, until the women started getting battle ready. Some of them started lining up in front of a shed and when the doors opened, a shitload of guns was revealed. Guns in hand, the women started shooting right at Tara, who was found out by a pretty clever alarm system the women had set up. Tara made a run for it, even taking a gun from one of the women, but it was Rachel a.k.a. The Bad Seed who stopped her. Tara was surrounded and about to have her head blown off by Rachel, but Cyndie stepped in again and saved Tara for the second time.
Later, Tara, handcuffed, met the leader of the camp, Cyndie’s grandma Natania. She wanted info and Tara made up some story of having worked on a fishing boat. Seeming to have convinced Natania, Tara was given a break and invited to dinner to get her real story. Tara told her about Alexandria and Heath the Deserter, about the attack on the Savior’s outpost and of course, Dr. Denise (RIP). Natania decided to let Tara go back home and told two of her people to go with her. Cyndie wanted to go too but Natania wasn’t trying to hear it. I smell a set up.
And that’s exactly what it was. Once they got far enough into the woods, Tara made a run for it and the two women started shooting. She almost made it but Beatrice tackled Tara and the two fought. But Beatrice got her gun and aimed it at Tara. She tried to talk her way out of it, but Beatrice was gonna end her. You see, the story Tara told about the Saviors was what scared them all. Apparently, she didn’t know that the Saviors were numerous and everywhere. Beatrice told her that her friends were probably dead already thanks to their attack. The Saviors were also the reason that the women were in hiding. They were attacked and all of the men over the age of 10 were slaughtered. So, the women ran, hid and have been killing strangers on sight ever since. They couldn’t take a chance on Tara. Just as she was about to end Tara’s life, Beatrice was tackled by Cyndie and Tara was saved AGAIN. She caught up to Tara on the bridge and helped her get through all of the walkers so she could get back to Alexandria, but not before Cyndie made Tara swear she would never tell her people about the camp. As Tara looked back, she saw Cyndie being taken back to her camp by Kathy. She turned back towards the road and noticed a pair of glasses that looked like Heath’s. Tara had a flashback of the bridge and we saw that Heath never abandoned her, he was just trying to get a better angle to help his friend. They were both surrounded by walkers and before falling over the bridge, Tara told Heath that they were in it together and he said, “I know” before she fell over. Ok, I’m glad to know Heath can still be trusted. I was wrong about him. Okay? Happy now?
Tara finally made it to Alexandria and was met at the gate by a changed Eugene. When he opened the gate, Tara saw Eugene crying and her face fell. After apparently hearing the news about Dr. Denise and everything else that happened, Tara was quietly sitting in the clinic with Rosita, who asked her if she saw any other camps that could help them get revenge on the Saviors. Tara said lied and said she didn’t see anything like that, keeping her promise to Cyndie.
Will Tara be able to keep her promise to Cyndie in the long run? What happened to Heath? And will we keep getting these quiet episodes before the show rips out hearts out again?
