When I tell you that I did a happy dance at the post office when I received an advance copy of Girls of Storm and Shadow, believe me. I truly did because I was so excited to read the next chapter in Lei’s and Wren’s story.
Lei and Wren have escaped the Hidden Palace, no longer courtesans of the cruel Demon King. They think they have done the impossible: the King is dead. Lei is being called Moonchosen and the rebels are ready to fight. But killing the King was only the beginning of the trials and tribulations Lei, Wren and the rest of their group will have to endure. In order to truly bring down the kingdom, they must travel across Ikhara to secure support from the demon clans, clans that may or may not be loyal to the Demon King. Will the rebels triumph? Or will those loyal to the King prevail?
Natasha Ngan has done it again with her second book in the series. She has upped the ante, giving readers more action, suspense, thrills and romance. But the author also writes about how Lei and Wren cope with the aftermath of being sexually assaulted by the Demon King. It affects them both in different ways, and Ms. Ngan doesn’t gloss over any of it. The writing about it is organic and doesn’t feel like it’s been dropped in for good measure. Instead of pandering, the author treats Lei’s and Wren’s feelings with dignity, and I appreciated that.
I think the embarrassing dance I did in the post office was absolutely worth it because Girls of Storm and Shadow gave me everything I wanted and more, with a cliffhanger that made me say, “No!” out loud. August has been an extremely busy month so I haven’t had the chance to read as much as I would like. But I dropped everything to read this book and you will too. I highly recommend it.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher.
